Compiled by Ryan Fleming '03 Terri Lyne Carrington David Thorne Scott Stan Strickland On February 18, Professor of Harmony Darrell Katz performed with the Jazz Composers Alliance at the Cambridge YMCA Theater, featuring new compo- sitions for the 19-piece JCA Orchestra. Other faculty composers included Bob Pilkington and Norm Zocher. Professor of Liberal Arts Bill Banfield premiered his Symphony 10: Affirmations for a New World featur- ing the a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center on April 13 and 14. Thomas Wilkins conducted the National Symphony Orchestra Pops in both performances. Professor Mick Goodrick and Associate Professor Tim Miller of the Guitar Department collaborated on the book Creative Chordal Harmony for Guitar published by Berklee Press. Assistant Professor of Piano Leo Blanco spoke at a March 10 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) event in Caracas, Venezuela, address- ing the influence of Africa on Western music. On April 12, Blanco's music was performed at Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH. Professor of Piano JoAnne Brackeen was featured on the cover of the March issue of JAZZed magazine. Former Thelonious Monk drummer Ben Riley featured Associate Professor of Guitar Freddie Bryant on his latest CD Grown Folks Music. Between per- forming and teaching dates in New York City and Europe, Bryant is com- pleting his own CD, Kaleidoscope. 8 Berklee today Professor of Percussion Terri Lyne Carrington won a Grammy in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for The Mosaic Project. Visit www. terrilynecarrington.com. Associate Professor of Woodwinds, Jamie Baum was nominated as the flutist of the year by the Jazz Journalists Association for its Jazz Awards 2012. Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts Suzanne Cope has earned her Ph.D. from Lesley University in the field of adult learning with a concentration in creative writing pedagogy. Professor of Liberal Arts Joseph A. Coroniti gave lectures in April at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. He addressed master's and Ph.D. candi- dates in the departments of jazz stud- ies and electronic music. Berklee Press published the book Jazz Piano Comping by Associate Professor of Piano Suzanne Davis. The woodwind quintet Suite of Five Seasons by Professor of Composition Beth Denisch was premiered in May in Rovaniemi, Finland. Associate Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production Bill Elliott received a 2012 Tony nomination for his orchestration of the Broadway musi- cal Nice Work If You Can Get It, starring Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara. The show opened on April 24. On May 15, Professor of Guitar David Fiuczynski released the CD Planet MicroJam. The Planet MicroJam Institute Ensemble will perform in New York City and in Europe. Associate Professor David Thorne Scott released a new jazz–pop cross- over album titled Hopeful Romantic. The album features faculty members Christine Fawson, Larry Finn, Scarlet Keys, and John Stein. Associate Professor of Voice Jeannie Gagné penned the book, Your Singing Voice, published by Berklee Press. Associate Professor of Music Business Andrea "Ani" Johnson spoke at the MIDEM Conference in Cannes, France, and presented a paper on music super- vision at the MEIEA Summit 2012 in Los Angeles. At the April "Rethink Music" conference, she presented a workshop on music licensing. Professors Neil Leonard and JoAnne Brackeen performed at the American Music Festival in Shanghai. Also, along with Tan Dun and Quincy Jones, Leonard judged student music compo- sitions for film and video for the Digital Audio China competition. Associate Professor of Liberal Arts Amy Merrill wrote the libretto for the musi- cal Silver Spoon, with music and lyrics by Si Kahn. Last year it was staged at the Theater in Cambridge, MA, and in April and May 2012 it ran at Heritage Music Theatre in Sebastopol, CA. Professor of Brass Tiger Okoshi played for a crowd of 10,000 people in Boston's Copley Square with a stu- dent ensemble for the Japan Spring Day Festival. In May, Okoshi was in Milan, Italy, to perform with Sadao Watanabe raising funds for victims of the Japanese tsunami and earthquake. Professor of Guitar Lauren Passarelli recently released the CD Blast of Love, her fifth album on Feather Records. Visit www.laurenpassarelli.com. Associate Professor of Voice Stan Strickland is the codirector of Express Yourself, an organization that will receive the Embracing the Legacy Award on June 14 from the Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps. Express Yourself gives at-risk youth exposure to the arts. Marco Pignataro, the managing director for the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, performed in February at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with Assistant Professor of Piano Nando Michelin (piano), Paolo Orlandi (drums), and John Patitucci (bass). Professor Bruno Råberg (bass) released a duo album with trumpeter Phil Grenadier titled Plunge. A CD release concert was held at the Lily Pad Gallery in Cambridge, MA, in April. Råberg also did a two-week tour of Japan with Tiger Okoshi that included clinics at the Hokkaido Groove Camp. Visit www. brunoraberg.com. Professor of Voice Maggie Scott appeared with the Boston Pops Orchestra on May 9 at Symphony Hall for its opening night concert, featuring the music of George Gershwin. Professor of Ear Training David Vose produced the CD Calling On Everyone: The Music of Michael Merrett.
