ALUMNOTES Jerry Velona '75 Bill Frisell '77 Meral Guneyman '74 1960 Former faculty member Dick Wright of Indianapolis, IN, recently relocated from Las Vegas, NV. Previously he led a jazz ensemble at the College of Southern Nevada and wrote orches- tral arrangements for trumpeter Tony Scodwell '63. 1964 Floyd Darden of Baguio, the Philippines, continued his music studies earning a bachelor's from Boston University, a master's from Governors State University, and a doctorate from Columbia Pacific University. He has played percussion for José Feliciano, Mel Tormé, and others. 1965 Stephen Gould of Somerville, MA, an assistant professor at Lesley University, was recently interviewed by the Ikeda Center in Cambridge, MA. Dean of Haledon, NJ, has released the CD These Things We Dig with the Whiskey Café Jazz Quintet featuring tunes by Hank Mobley, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, and others. Faith Ozan of Laguna Beach, CA, teaches music to people with autism and runs a private teaching studio offering piano, percussion, singing, and movement instruction. 1974 In February, pianist Meral Guneyman of Pennington, NJ, gave the West Virginia premiere of Justin Dello Joio's Due per Due with cellist Sölen Dikener. She has also recorded two duo albums with jazz pianist Dick Hyman. Guneyman is a Steinway art- ist. Visit www.meralguneyman.com. Robert Parr of Argyle, TX, recorded and mixed the Sirius XM Radio broad- cast of "Live in the Vineyard." He is currently producing an album for British blues artist Martin Harley. In December 2011, pianist Steve Sternberg of Tallahassee, FL, provided the music for the 1926 silent movie The Flying Ace featuring elements of popular music of the era. Visit www. stevesternberg.com. 1975 After suffering a stroke, Charlie Borzillire of Silver Creek, NY, is awaiting a Selmer tenor saxophone adapted to allow access to the full range of the horn with only the left hand. Borzillire is a member of the New Horizons Band of Western New York. Jerry Velona of Arlington, MA, released the two-song CD Little Loaded, including a cover of the Beatles song "Little Child" and an original titled "Locked Out and Loaded." Featured on the disc are Kevin Barry '88, Marty Richards '85, Anthony Vitti '86, and Zac Casher '90. Visit www. brucegarnitz.com. 1977 On April 19, guitarist Bill Frisell of Seattle, WA, was announced as a win- ner of a large cash award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Compiled by Ryan Fleming '03 Bruce Garnitz '76 Trombonist Bill Gibson of Sioux Falls, SD, was recently appointed as the musical director for Cunard Cruise Lines. He is also a clinician for Edwards trombones. Singer/songwriter Steve Gilligan of Milton, MA, released his first solo album project, Jacob's Well. For more information, visit www.ldsteve.com. Harrison Goldberg of Gualala, CA, developed and presented an interac- tive program on creativity to a group of businessmen in Sonoma and Mendocino counties in California. 1978 Tod Cooper of Bell Canyon, CA, super- vised the music for the film musical Lucky Stiff, featuring songs by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. Josh Sklair of Culver City, CA, worked as the musical director, guitarist, and arranger for singer Etta James for over 25 years, earning two Grammys for producing and playing on her albums.
